Karolína Charlton is an artist whose work has long been driven by experiment, invention and the search for unexpected combinations. She studied ceramics at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, and her path led from conceptual fine art to the contemporary art jewellery she makes today. She now works from her studio at Umělecká laboratoř (The Artistic Laboratory) in Ulička řemesel, the Alley of Crafts, in Turnov. Karolína Charlton je výtvarnice, jejíž tvorbu dlouhodobě provází experiment, vynalézání a hledání nečekaných spojení. Vystudovala keramiku na Gerrit Rietveld Academie v Amsterdamu a její cesta vedla od konceptuální volné tvorby až k současnému autorskému šperku. Dnes tvoří ve svém ateliéru v Umělecké laboratoři v Uličce řemesel v Turnově.

She came to jewellery not through a conventional training in the craft, but from fine art and object making. Her pieces begin as small sculptures for the body, and acquire their wearability only in the course of the making. Ke šperku nepřišla cestou klasického šperkařského vzdělání, ale z volné a objektové tvorby. Její šperky tak vznikají spíše jako malé sochy pro tělo, které teprve v průběhu tvůrčího procesu získávají svou nositelnost.

She works with bone china of her own formulation, in many states — from liquid porcelain slip to paper porcelain. She uses no moulds; the form of each object is shaped by an intuitive process and a close response to the behaviour of the material. Into some porcelain objects she applies gold or platinum by hand, which become part of the surface during firing. Pracuje s kostním porcelánem vlastní receptury a využívá různé způsoby jeho zpracování – od tekuté porcelánové hmoty po papírový porcelán. Nepoužívá formy; podobu objektu spoluurčuje intuitivní tvůrčí proces a citlivé reagování na vlastnosti materiálu. Do některých porcelánových objektů ručně aplikuje zlato či platinu, které se během výpalu stanou součástí jejich povrchu.

Only once the porcelain object exists does she look for the metal component that respects its character and allows it to be worn. In her most recent work she continues to develop the possibilities of joining bone china with other materials. In some pieces she combines it with cut Bohemian garnet, and in collaboration with Preciosa she is experimenting with pairing white bone china and glass. Teprve pro vzniklý porcelánový objekt hledá kovový komponent, který respektuje jeho charakter a umožní mu stát se nositelným. V nejnovější tvorbě dále rozvíjí možnosti propojování kostního porcelánu s dalšími materiály. V některých špercích jej kombinuje s broušeným českým granátem, ve spolupráci s Preciosou pak experimentuje s propojením bílého kostního porcelánu a skla.

Each piece is therefore an original — an unrepeatable combination of material, moment and intuitive decision. Každý šperk tak vzniká jako originál – neopakovatelná kombinace materiálu, okamžiku a intuitivního rozhodnutí.

She grew up in a home where art was a natural part of life. One sentence of her father’s, an actor, stayed with her: “Art is the ability to make new combinations.” Only with time did she realise how precisely it described her own way of working. Vyrůstala v prostředí, kde bylo umění přirozenou součástí života. Do paměti se jí vryla jedna věta jejího otce, herce: „Umění je schopnost nových kombinací.“ Až s odstupem času si uvědomila, jak přesně vystihuje její vlastní způsob tvorby.

Her work is bound up with the transience and singularity of the present moment. She does not try to master the emerging form completely, nor to repeat it; she accepts mutability as a natural part of making. Her personal motto is that “the only constant in life is change.” Její práce souvisí s vnímáním pomíjivosti a jedinečnosti přítomného okamžiku. Nesnaží se vznikající tvar dokonale ovládnout ani opakovat; proměnlivost přijímá jako přirozenou součást tvorby. Jejím osobním mottem je, že „jedinou životní konstantou je změna.“
